Animal Tooth Netsuke
No discounts accepted
In Japan, animal teeth have long been used as netsuke for good luck charms.
Historically, from mountain ascetics like Yamabushi to Matagi hunters, they were carried as amulets.
Teeth were taken from bears and other animals, and some are said to be valuable teeth from Japanese wolves, but this appears to be a bear tooth.
This is a set including a netsuke, a bead for a drawstring, a tobacco pouch, and a pipe case. The bear netsuke is missing one canine tooth, but it is a masterpiece that shows considerable age. The bead is likely agate, but details are unknown. The inside of the tobacco pouch is lacquered.
